The very recent debate on gender that was initiated within Polish Catholic Church in the 2013 displays mechanisms of linguistic manipulations aimed at diminishing and ridiculing the feminist and gender movements, using (and abusing) the position of religious authority and rhetoric of “tradition in danger”.
This manipulating discourse took place from 2013 in Polish media and was fruitful in blocking many feminist and gender initiatives. It was especially vital as a representative case of contemporary backlash against feminism – not only in Eastern Europe and Russia but also in the West - resulted from misunderstanding and simplifying the feminist positions. Key words: language and gender; feminist movement; hate speech; linguistic manipulations, Polish contemporary history, post-communism. CONFERENCE OF BASEES 2015 http://www.basees2015.org |
