This talk is a result of a research in 2013/2014 of Polish media discourse. I have presented outcome of this scrutiny at the BASEES conference in 2015 and also I continue this research and present the outcome at the International Symposium of Women's Study in Warsaw (December 2015)
Monstrous Gender: “Feminist” Language versus Ideological Manipulation
(On Recent Misinterpretations of Gender in the Background of Two Decades of Feminisms in Poland)
The very recent debate on gender that was initiated within Polish Catholic Church in the 2013 displays mechanisms of linguistic manipulations aimed at diminishing and ridiculing the feminist and gender movements, using (and abusing) the position of religious authority and rhetoric of “tradition in danger”.
This manipulating discourse took place from 2013 in Polish media and was fruitful in blocking many feminist and gender initiatives. It was especially vital as a representative case of contemporary backlash against feminism – not only in Eastern Europe and Russia but also in the West - resulted from misunderstanding and simplifying the feminist positions.
Key words: language and gender; feminist movement; hate speech; linguistic manipulations, Polish contemporary history, post-communism.

Dialogue with Amy (on gender, patriarchy and a male goose)
gender has invaded poland
dżender not gender
foreign in forms and sound
polish family is in danger
danger with gender
gender as danger
gender of gander
and gandera are also
adult male geese.
did you know this?
there is no time to joke here
polish mothers are
withdrawing toddlers from all the nurseries where dangerous gender has been mentioned.
one has to save the nation.
gender is an enemy
it is clear to me
nicely round, properly accentuated, with a scary “ge”
as all the enemies:
genocides, Jesuit, gestures, gibberish, generous, genesis, german, gentleman, jealousy, genitals, geographically-spread gentries
do you want more of these?
don’t be a fool
don’t believe in dżender
rule is a rule
clear like ten commandments
there are mothers and hunters in this world
nothing in-between: gay, lesbian or queer
nothing of this sort
sadly glancing now at my bookshelves
don-quixote-ing all above
is above so crazy?
is it so unique?
After all patriarchy –
those adult male geese
one big clique
